The children were raised in the Palace under the unique segmentation instituted by Momoh the First. Momoh ensured that all his children attended school when they were old enough. To promote unity, love and cooperation among the wives and children, Momoh’s brothers, Mallam Aliu and Abudah, administered an oath of allegiance among the wives which they gladly took pledging that they’d be loyal to their husband and would do nothing to hurt him, their co-wives and the children in the household.

Whenever there was a disagreement between children or there was an injury during play, the mother of the injured child took the child to the mother of the one who inflicted the injury to take care of him until he is healed. If a woman puts to bed, the baby had an adoptive mother who takes the child to Momoh the First to report the birth. Momoh names the child and sends the adoptive mother to Abudah who lavishes both the biological mother and adoptive mother with gifts. The adoptive mother cares for the biological mother and her child and did all the tasks necessary, including bathing the child and preparing food for the new mother. Such an arrangement was to also have an implication on the Momoh Household: one of the wives did not have a child for Momoh, but she raised a child in the household as her own.

One of Momoh’s children from his first wife (Ovbianoigbo) was Zibiri Momoh, one of the wealthiest and most popular Momoh’s in the 1930s. While he was a student at Ibadan Government College, he met a young man, Adams, and they became friends. Zibiri Momoh later worked at John Holt while Adams worked in a plantation in Ibadan.Adams lost his job and Zibiri sent him to Momoh the First with a note asking for assistance. Although the local council had completed recruitment, Momoh the First employed Adams as a clerical assistant and brought him into the household. Adams fell in love with one of Momoh’s daughters, Rametu and gleefully announced it to Momoh the First who was seemingly indifferent until Adams impregnated Rametu.

Momoh’s brother, Mallam Aliu swore to kill Adams and attempted to carry out the threat. Momoh’s second son, Gimah, intervened to try to douse the tension to no avail, until the matter was reported to Momoh who promised to intervene. Momoh was to ask Adams through his personal associate to decide between a wife and his job, and Adams said he preferred the woman. Momoh then sent Jimah Ogah (his personal associate) with Rametu with the message that Adams should take his wife and leave the Palace before the break of dawn or face Momoh’s wrath. Adams took his wife and left immediately for his hometown. He received a hero’s welcome in Jattu and in Ikabigbo for marrying a Princess from the Momoh Family. When Adams’ father became aware of the circumstances through which he got a wife, he got a group of people to accompany him to placate Momoh the First.  Momoh the First said he was not angry, that he infact respected the decision of the young man and his daughter. He prayed for them. Rametu and Adams had several children, including Godwin Aretanekai Adams, who was Group Managing Director of NNPC between 1985 and 1990 and later special adviser to the President of Nigeria on Petroleum Matters between 1998 and 1999. Rametu Adams also became the third Ogbaichi of Auchi.
