Momoh's Family

HRH Otaru A.K. Momoh

Otaru A.K. Momoh was educated at the Government School in Auchi. He trained as a finance clerk and worked in the Afemai Division. He also had Islamic education and was an Islamic scholar. Otaru A.K. Momoh was described as cool-headed but firm, intelligent and pious but amiable, and used his wealth to ensure that all his children received tertiary education. Many of his children went on to distinguish themselves in various walks of life, both at the state and national levels. One of his daughters, Constance Ayashe Rakiya Momoh (CFR), was the first female chief judge of Edo State Judiciary and Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal, while his son, Major General Hafiz Momoh was Director General of the National Youth Service Corps.

As Otaru, Auchi began to receive tremendous development. It was during his time that the Midwest Polytechnic (now Auchi Polytechnic) was built. Though it was a promise that had been made to Momoh the First, it was fulfilled during the reign of Otaru A.K. Momoh. The General Hospital which began during the reign of his predecessor was completed and opened; pipe-borne water was introduced and many roads were tarred to neighbouring towns. During the reign of Otaru A.K. Momoh, his brother, Kessington Momoh, was a parliamentary secretary to Chief Obafemi Awolowo (Premier of Western Region) and was able to influence some development to Auchi.
