Momoh's Family

HRH Otaru A.G. Momoh, Ikelebe II

Otaru A.G. Momoh was born on 15th March 1920. He had his elementary education in Auchi and Agbede, and proceeded for high school in Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha. He spent only a year there before proceeding to Kings College in Lagos where he completed his secondary education. He trained as a clerical instructor at the Institute of Administration in Zaria, Kaduna State. He began his career at the Northern Nigerian civil service and transferred to the Federal Public Service, working in various capacities as a private secretary, and an executive in the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Establishment and Ministry of Industry. He was the preferred candidate for the Otaru of Auchi in 1973 after a three-year hiatus in Kingship in Auchi.

Described as sometimes fiery, he was an amiable and affable man who was an influential and highly-respected figure in Northern Nigeria. When he ascended the Throne, his influence in Northern Nigeria cemented Auchi’s position among the traditional oligarchy in Northern Nigeria.

During the reign of Otaru A.G. Momoh, Auchi Teacher’s College and the Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering were established. Many who worked their way to the top echelon of the Nigerian military also served there. Three large community grammar schools were also established and several private schools blossomed. One of the old generation banks opened a branch in Auchi, providing the pathway for other banks to follow.

Otaru A.G. Momoh passed on in 1996 after 23 years on the Throne.
