Prince Michael Aliu Momoh (Distinguished Sportsman and Educationist)
Prince Michael Aliu Momoh, popularly known as Washington Momoh, was born on the 1st of July 1928. He was the 70th child of Momoh the First born to him by Anima from Iyekhei.
He attended Government School Auchi before he was “donated” by Momoh the First to the Anglican Missionaries when they requested he sent one of his children to the Mission after he gave a large parcel of land, and they were unsatisfied and wanted to make sure he wasn’t merely tolerating them. Washington Momoh joined the Anglican Mission and was baptized in 1949.
He trained at the Teachers College, Owo in Ondo State and worked as a teacher in Okpe, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. He rose to become a Chief Inspector of Education before retiring from the civil service.
Washington Momoh is one of the Momoh descendants who distinguished himself in sports when he played lawn tennis which he initially began as a pastime. However, he represented the old Bendel State in several sporting competitions. In Auchi, he was part of the team that promoted sporting activities that seemed to have taken strong roots, and inspired his own children to engage in sporting activities and win laurels for the State in national competitions.
